The discipline of cardiovascular medicine has undergone a striking transformation in recent decades. The field has always been of primary importance in medicine, because of the high prevalence of diseases of the cardiovascular system. However, progress in the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease has been substantial, and overall mortality from this cause has declined significantly. Nevertheless, cardiovascular disease remains the most frequent cause of death in this country and is also an important cause of morbidity.
