The paper deals with the organization HL7 and with its activities including general view to the development of the standard. The paper explains why the standards ae necessary and how HL7 meets these needs. In particular, it deals with bases of the standard HL7, i.e. the standard for exchanging of messages, segments, data fields, and data elements. There are described trigger events, data types, and syntax. The final part of the paper describes the Version 3 of the standard.
