Medical consultation - The role of an internist
Because modern medicine has become more sophisticated and specialized, a practicing physician often needs to consult other specialties or subspecialties in the care of their patients. Consultation is an important activity in medicine today. Internists are often consulted by his colleagues from surgery, gynecology, obstetrics, psychiatry or other specialties or subspecialties. Therefore, how to complete a successful consultation in order to achieve a inter-disciplinary patient care is discussed here. A successful consultation begins with a set of well-defined questions. The consultant should then obtain data first-hand and provide concise, specific and feasible recommendations ; he(she) should communicate with the referring physician with a positive and helpful attitude and also provide teaching relevant to problems in question to his colleagues and follow the patient if needed.
