Thermal failure develops in saturated clays of low porosity, when, relatively large deviatoric strain occurs due to heating at constant total stress. Experiments in undrained conditions show a water pressure buildup resulting in the plastic flow at temperatures from 60° to 90°C. Thermo-plastic-hydraulic model is used to interpret this phenomenon and to simulate it numerically. -Authors
