The role of epidemiology studies in ergonomics research was discussed. Epidemiology is a set of established and developing methodologies approaches for understanding injury and illness causation and prevention in human populations. It was demonstrated that ergonomics improvements were effective and efficient in preventing the occurence of musculoskeletal disorders. A series of challenges for injury epidemiology were presented in the context of the assessment of exposures relevant to back injuries among construction workers.
