Electrotherapy involves electric or magnetic stimulation of the human body in a range of therapeutic applications including pain alleviation. A wide spectrum of electrotherapy paradigms have been deployed in pain treatment, illustrating the inherent flexibility of this technology, but also the fundamental challenge of determining an optimal strategy. The effective and safe application of electrotherapy requires an understanding of the basic components of electrotherapy technology, as well as how to control electrotherapy dose. These topics are introduced in this review, along with related comments on the general mechanisms of electrotherapy, as well as an overview of various electrotherapy paradigms. © 2009 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
