L²-cohomology of arithmetic varieties

The L₂-cohomology of arithmetic quotients of bounded symmetric domains is studied. We establish the conjecture of Zucker equating the L₂-cohomology of these spaces to the intersection cohomology of their Baily-Borel compactifications.
