The electrospray MS/MS was used for the qualitative characterization of digestive surfactants in a marine deposit-feeding worm. The digestive fluids collected from Neresis succinea were separated by gradient HPLC, with collection of discrete two-minute fractions and simultaneous ESI-MS, micromass and UV detection throughout 80 minutes run. Accurate mass measurement and high resolution MS/MS spectra were obtained for several surfactant candidate compounds. The compounds were identified as amide-linked conjugates of cysteine and methylcysteine with C9 to C12 mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids.
