The treatment of patients presenting with acute ocular conditions accompanied by pain and inflammation is an important aspect of therapeutic optometric practice. Topical therapy has traditionally included cycloplegics and steroids. Recent advances in ocular treatment have significantly modified our ability to control pain and inflammation encountered in anterior segment eye disease. New medications including the so called "soft steroids" have a kinder side-effect profile. The introduction of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in topical formulations has increased our ability to treat the vast majority of cases topically, avoiding the potential side-effects and systemic complications of oral medications. In this article, the author reviews the therapeutic options in the treatment of anterior segment inflammation and pain.
