Evidence is presented to show that cyclic AMP stimulates cartilage growth processes and that some or all of the actions of growth hormone dependent serum sulfation factor may be mediated by the generation of cyclic AMP. We have further presented a theoretical model to suggest that the effects of cyclic AMP on cartilage macromolecule synthesis may be determined by the relative intracellular concentrations of cyclic AMP and adenosine rather than the absolute concentrations of cyclic AMP.
