In the last century there have been marked increases in life expectancy. In addition, if people reach their 80s they appear to have a further increase in life expectancy which deviates from the Gompertz curve. Many of these changes appear to be due to improved sanitation and treatment of infectious diseases. Improved intake of a balanced, although at times excessive caloric, diet also appears to have played a role. The mitochondria and oxidative damage from the associated bioenergetics are postulated to play a role in eventually limiting life expectancy. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
