Overview


Kale(y) Makino is a multimedia artist, poet, and director physically from Detroit, Michigan and spiritually the ether. Her primary focus is work that blends performance studies with environmental ethics through modes of poetic expression. She holds a BA and MA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and was a 2023-2025 Sage Fellow in Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. In 2024, she was awarded a Mellon Grant towards Documenting Local Lives with the Society for the Humanities. Her practice at Duke will center around questions of how art can communicate new perspectives in environmental engagement and cultural memory. In her free time, she loves to sing the blues and take care of her wild little flock of chickens.
