Overview


Mr. Beeler graduated with an MGA from the University of Maryland with a BSP in Social Work and Correctional Administration, magna cum laude, from East Carolina University. Mr. Beeler began his career in 1975 as Correctional Officer at the Federal Reformatory in Petersburg, Virginia, has held increasingly responsible administrative and CEO positions throughout the United States, and has served, since 2007, as the Complex Warden at the Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, North Carolina.

He began teaching in 1977 as a Field Instructor for the Department of Social Work and Correctional Administration in Greenville, North Carolina. He has held positions as a Curriculum Consultant, a Program Advisor and an Adjunct Professor/Guest Lecturer at the Department of Criminal Justice at Eastern Kentucky University, in Richmond, Kentucky, North Carolina Central University; East Carolina University; in the Leadership Studies and Political Science at Peace College, and at Duke Law beginning in 2006.

In addition to Advanced Issues in Criminal Justice, some of Mr. Beeler’s lecture titles at Duke Law have included Prison Rape Elimination Act from a Public Policy Perspective; the Impact of Supreme Court Decisions upon Practical Running of Mental Health Hospitals; Mental Health Law and the Insanity Defense, and a seminar on Punishment and Sentencing. He has also delivered similar lectures at East Carolina University and Peace College.

Mr. Beeler is a much sought-after speaker, and has written articles for publications such as Corrections Compendium; Corrections Today; and the Journal of American Academy of Physician Assistants. He has also served as an expert witness for the Massachusetts Department of Correction, and Prison Rape Elimination Commission.

He has receive numerous awards, among them the H. G. “Gus” Moeller Award for Correctional Excellence, North Carolina Correctional Association, Distinguished Service Award from the Bureau of Prisons, the Compassion in Action Award from the Dali Lama Foundation, and the U. S. Surgeon’s General Medallion.
