Master of Divinity (M.Div.) Student, 2021-Present

Arthur Maxwell Powell II is a third-year Master of Divinity student at Duke University Divinity School. He is a Thriving Communities Fellow pursuing certificates in Baptist Studies and Black Church Studies. As a Benjamin A. Quarles Undergraduate Scholar, Arthur earned a Bachelor of Art in Sociology from Morgan State University in 2020. Currently at Duke, he is a Residential Program Assistant for Housing and Residence Life, a Student Associate for the Americas Initiative for Transformation and Reconciliation with Dr. Nina Balmaceda, and he serves as the President of the Black Seminarians Union.
Arthur aspires to use his knowledge, gifts, and abilities to work in the higher education/research sector after graduation. His research interests include: social organizations, social movements, and sociological theory with a population focus of the Black Church. Regarding theology, Arthur is drawn to the studies of homiletics, Christian ethics, and the intersection of the social gospel and sociology.
