Arthur Maxwell Powell II was raised in Las Vegas, NV. He is a second-year M.Div. student at Duke Divinity School. He is a Thriving Communities Fellow pursuing certificates in Baptist Studies and Black Church Studies. He earned an A.A. in Business and Social Sciences from Prince Georges Community College. As a Benjamin A. Quarles Undergraduate Scholar, Arthur graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Sociology from Morgan State University in 2020. Currently at Duke, he is an Office Assistant for Dean Powery’s Office, he serves as the Vice President of the Black Seminarians Union at Duke Divinity School, and he is involved in Congregations, Associations and Neighborhoods (CAN) Durham chapter. He aspires to use his knowledge, gifts, and abilities to work in the higher education/research sector after graduation. Arthur’s current research interests include: the Black Church, homiletics, Christian ethics, and the intersection of the social gospel and sociological theory.
