Overview

I am a PhD student in the Department of Philosophy and an MA candidate in Bioethics and Science Policy, specializing in health law and medical ethics. I graduated from Duke Law School in 2017, focusing on health law.

I work at the intersection of law, ethics, and medicine on topics surrounding the end-of-life experience, including the legal definition of death, the regulation of assisted dying, and policy issues involved in advance directives. I aim to research and advocate for improvements to law and medicine that can help reduce the suffering involved in the dying process. My dissertation examines the concept of “dying well” and the role palliative medicine can help play in supporting patients to die well. My work is centered on the law governing healthcare provided at the end of life, and can be divided into three main areas: 1) the legal definition of death, 2) law and policy issues involved in advance directives, and 3) the regulation of assisted dying.
