Overview
I am a pediatric emergency medicine specialist who provides care for children in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Duke. My goal is to provide safe and effective medical care that is tailored to children and delivered in an environment that is inclusive and equitable for all families. As we are a teaching hospital, it is also my responsibility to ensure that the resident physicians and students who work alongside me each day are learning to provide the highest level of care for our pediatric patients.
My areas of interest within Pediatric Emergency Medicine include Point-of-Care Ultrasound (or "POCUS") and improving emergency care for children in resource-limited settings using ultrasound. Point-of-Care Ultrasound allows physicians to use a portable ultrasound machine at the patient's bedside to gather essential information that informs our diagnosis and treatment plans. We can use POCUS in the Pediatric ED to rapidly assess children after serious trauma, to identify causes of breathing problems without using Xray, and to guide procedures such as IV line placement in infants and children. I've been able to use and teach POCUS to pediatric providers both within and outside the United States.
