Overview

My research focuses on subject formation and otherness within poetic and ethical discourses of German Romanticism. I work among a broad selection of genres spanning German Orientalism, Idealist metaphysics and aesthetics, mysticism, and the philosophy of nature. In my teaching and writing I favor comparative strategies of interpretation including postcolonial and new philological approaches. I regularly locate the texts I examine within broad systems of intellectual history including philosophy, social behavior, and the history of math and science. In my work on Orientalism, I engage with South Asian, English, and French texts that heavily impacted the reception of the Indian Orient in the Western 18th century.
