Current Research Interests

My interests are in three main areas: 1) to understand the role of epigenetic mechanisms of gene transcription in the development of substance abuse and other psychiatric disorders. The long-last modification of DNA methylation is increasingly linked to the persistent nature of many neuropsychological disorders. In my research, I employ neurogenetic (such as optogenetics, CRISPR) and rodent behaviors (such as mouse intravenous self-administration, rodent risky decision-making tasks) to study the contribution of DNA methylation and histone modification to the behavioral persistence of substance abuse. 2) to develop blood-based biomarkers for neurological disorders such as stroke and Parkinson’s disease. The lack of effective and safely accessible biomarker is the major hinderance to preventive measures and effective treatment in many aging-related neurological disorders.  In my work, we develop ultra-sensitive ELISA assay to assess neural proteins crossing blood-brain-barrier into peripheral blood as the result of stroke-associated neural injuries. 3) to develop and commercialize antibody technologies applicable to next generation immunohistochemistry (IHC). The rapid development of tissue clearing and multiplex IHC allows researchers to maximize the detection of in situ molecular changes in physiological and pathological processes. These new technologies, however, bring unprecedented challenge to current antibody technology that are only measured by antibody specificity and sensitivity. In my work, we develop antibodies that are optimized in tissue penetrations and signal strengths essential for their applications in new generation IHC technologies.
