John Hubert Stewart IV
Associate Professor of Surgery

Dr. John H. Stewart, IV, MD, MBA is a member of the Division of Advanced Oncologic and Gastrointestinal Surgery.  He also serves as the Chief of Surgery at the Durham Veterans Administration Hospital.

Prior to his arrival at Duke, Dr. Stewart served as the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Wake Forest School of Medicine Department of Surgery and Associate Dean for Clinical Research and Innovation at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Dr. Stewart completed his general surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and fellowships in surgical oncology, tumor immunology and molecular oncology at the National Cancer Institute. He has established a national profile as a leader in education, scientific research, and the delivery of cancer care to underserved populations. He has served on numerous minority health advisory committees and currently serves on the Executive Board of the Minorities in Cancer Research for the American Association for Cancer Research.

His current clinical interests are in general surgical oncology with a focus on melanoma as well as gastrointestinal, and peritoneal surface malignancies.  Best Doctors, Top Doctors, and Top Surgeons have recognized Dr. Stewart for his achievements in patient care. Both the National Cancer Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have funded his research efforts on cancer-killing viruses. He has published his research in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Cancer, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Journal of Immunotherapy, Annals of Surgical Oncology, the Journal of Surgical Research, American Journal of Surgery and Transplantation, Surgery, and Cancer Gene Therapy.
