Dr. Weiner completed his undergraduate education at Duke University with a special interest in human evolution, cognitive psychology, and psycholinguistics.  He then worked as a psychiatric technician in an inpatient psychiatric unit in Durham, where he was inspired by Dr. Fred Melges to become a psychiatrist.  After graduating from the University of North Carolina Medical School, Dr. Weiner completed a transitional year in Medicine and Surgery at the Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco, California and then moved back to North Carolina to complete psychiatric residency at Duke University.  Following residency training, he completed a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at the Federal Correction Institution in Butner, North Carolina.  Dr. Weiner has been a Staff Psychiatrist at the Durham VA Medical Center since 1993. He has also maintained a private Forensic Psychiatry practice since 1992 and testified in numerous civil and criminal trials.  His diverse clinical interests include motivational interviewing and addiction medicine, neuroimaging in PTSD, neuropsychiatry, dynamic supportive therapy, and applying forensic psychiatric principles to clinical care.
