Fellowships, Gifts, and Supported Research

Aggregating and Visualizing Environmental Biological, Physiological, and Outcome Data in Acute Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury · 2016 - 2017 Co-PI · Awarded by: Duke University, School of Medicine, Center for Applied Genomics and Precision Medicine. · $22,500.00 The aims of this study are to test the feasibility of collecting environmental and movement sensor data from pediatric patients at Duke Hospital and applying that data to aggregate omic and physiologic data to examine potential trajectories in short-term outcomes. This study lays the groundwork for future studies to develop algorithms that visualize the data for clinical decision making.
Collecting and Aggregating Omic and Environmental Data in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: A Pilot Study · 2016 - 2018 PI · Awarded by: Duke University, School of Nursing · $20,000.00 This study will test the feasibility of collecting omic and immune system data while measuring for physiologic changes in the patient. We will also incorporate the use of wireless sensors (temperature, humidity, particulate matter, light, and sound) to measure the patient’s immediate environment and immune profiles. These data will provide us with the opportunity to examine the unique patient environment, while taking into account real-time responses of the immune system to different exposures and stressors in relationship to short-term outcomes.
Relationship of Endothelin-1 and Cerebral Vasospasm in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury · 2013 - 2016 PI · Awarded by: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar · $348,631.00 The aims of this study explore the relationships between cerebral vasospasm, endothelin 1 biomarker, endothelin 1gene polymorphisms, and functional outcomes in children with a traumatic brain injury. Exploring the Endothelin 1 biomarker and gene polymorphisms will help us know if cerebral vasospasm can be identified in certain children and will aid in developing interventional approaches to promote improved outcomes.
Physiologic Adaptation and Neurocognitive Outcomes in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury · 2012 - 2015 PI · Awarded by: National Institutes of Health / National Institute of Nursing Research, through the Center for Adaptive Leadership in Cognitive/Affective Symptom Science · $140,568.00 The aims of this study explore the relationships between cerebral vasospasm, apolipoprotein-E (apo-E) genotype, physiologic symptoms, and neurocognitive outcomes that may either intensify or ameliorate secondary injury, for children with a traumatic brain injury. Exploring the apo-E genotype will help us know if injury response is altered in certain children and will aid in developing interventional approaches.
Measuring Vasospasm, Biomarkers, and Neurocognitive Outcomes in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury · 2011 - 2012 PI · Awarded by: Duke University School of Nursing · $11,880.00 This prospective feasibility pilot study measures cerebral vasospasm using a Transcranial Doppler ultrasound and biologic markers while examining neurocognitive outcomes in children with a traumatic brain injury.
