My dissertation “Empire at the Exhibition: The Imperial Art World of Modern Japan (1907-1937)” examines the role of art in the making of the Japanese empire. By investigating the imperial network of fine arts exhibitions in Tokyo, Seoul, and Taipei and its ubiquitous representations in the mass media, I demonstrate how the expansion of the Japanese empire encouraged an intensive flow of artists between the metropole and the colonies. Similarly, by contributing to the emergence of empire-wide art audiences and by policing ethnic boundaries, such art practices constituted a crucial component of empire building.
