Meenal B. Patwardhan
Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine

My interest lies in the real-life application of clinical evidence. A major component of my research relates to clinical practice improvement - from the development of clinical guidelines to their implementation in real world clinical settings. My major content focus has been chronic kidney disease. I have served as a methodological consultant for the development of a chronic kidney disease guideline, and performance measures for the guideline. Subsequent to this I have been working on a modified TQM technique for process improvement – Facilitated Process Improvement. We have developed implementation tools based on this process for implementing the chronic kidney disease guideline. A pilot project that will evaluate the impact of this activity will be initiated in the fall of 2004. I also serve as consultant in the area of quality improvement in India.
Other areas in which I am interested are the evaluation of outcomes. I am currently evaluating the impact of a headache CME program on the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of physicians using questionnaires, vignettes, and simulated patients.
In addition to this, I have also been working on technology assessments for the CMS in the areas of the utility of PET in cognitive disorders, and several cancers. I have also been working on the epidemiology and costs of multiple sclerosis, and plan to continue with that work.
Key Words: chronic kidney disease, colorectal cancer, decision analysis, clinical guidelines, implementation, practice improvement, quality improvement, outcomes, performance measurement, simulated patients
