Overview


Ambassador (ret.) Miriam Sapiro is a Visiting Professor of the Practice at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy, and a Senior Adviser (non-resident) at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

Throughout her career Miriam has worked successfully with governments and international organizations around the world to address complex challenges at the intersection of international and domestic policy. Her experience spans Democratic and Republican administrations, and includes working in senior roles in government, the private sector and the NGO community. Upon confirmation by the Senate with the rank of Ambassador, Miriam served as Deputy and Acting U.S. Trade Representative. At the National Security Council, she served as Special Assistant to the President and Counselor for Southeast European Stabilization & Reconstruction and previously as Director of European Affairs. She began her career as an international lawyer at the State Department before joining the Secretary of State’s Policy Planning Staff, where she helped negotiate the Dayton Peace Accords that ended the war in Bosnia.

In 2021, Miriam was named the inaugural Distinguished Fellow at Polis. She serves on the Board of Directors of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and the Board of Directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Miriam has published in and served as a commentator for major news outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, The Washington Post, NPR, CNBC, CNN, Newsweek, Bloomberg, USA Today, U.S. News & World Report and Foreign Affairs.
