Molly Martin

Molly Eileen Martin is a first-year musicologist and a vocalist.

Molly holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, which she completed in May of 2019. There she studied improvisation under the composer and scholar Hankus Netsky, PhD., and voice with the renowned recording artist and composer Dominique Eade. She became interested in the field of Musicology under the instruction of scholars Helen Greenwald, PhD., and Katarina Markovic, PhD. Her recital in fulfillment of the B.Mus. included among others the music of Irving Berlin, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Rodgers and Hammerstein, as well as an original composition. Her final thesis during her undergraduate studies was a project entitled “The Threepenny Opera: ‘The Most Consistent Reaction to Wagner?’” 

Her performance history as a vocalist includes multiple performances with the NEC Big Band under the direction of Ken Schaphorst, as well as participation in the NEC Gospel music ensemble under the direction of Nedelka Prescod and various performances of rock, folk, and pop music. As an educator, Molly recently held a teaching fellowship with the Boston Children’s Chorus, and is currently an instructor at the School of Rock Chapel Hill.

Molly is most interested Opera at the turn of the century, Expressionism in music, vocal jazz, and music and narrative. She is recently most inspired by the operas of Richard Strauss, the music of Kurt Weill, and the music of Richard Wagner. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, she is also interested in the city’s role in the histories of classical, jazz, and popular music.
