Stoney Portis is a PhD candidate in English at Duke University. He graduated from West Point and has master's degrees from Dartmouth College and the Command and General Staff College. His dissertation uses archetypes from the Ancient Greeks to analyze American war literature that features soldiers and veterans who struggle with suicide. His work seeks to understand the challenges of returning home from war and how combat appears to create a sense of fatalism among some of its participants.
