Overview
Tobi Walter is a Partner at Cofounders Capital, a Durham-based venture capital fund investing in early-stage B2B software companies across North Carolina and the Southeast, where he leads investments and serves on the boards of portfolio companies. At Duke, he teaches Entrepreneurial Finance (I&E 360) each spring — a hands-on course on the mechanics of startup financing, built around live deals, real term sheets, and the financial models behind venture transactions, for aspiring founders, venture investors, bankers, and future angels and LPs.
Before moving to the investor side of the table, Tobi was a serial entrepreneur and operator. He co-founded Shoeboxed, a SaaS fintech company that automated receipt management and bookkeeping for small businesses, and led it through a successful exit in 2018. He began his career in investment banking, and his operating and finance background spans fundraising, M&A, and scaling early-stage companies on both sides of the Atlantic.
Originally from Germany, Walter holds a degree from WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. His teaching draws directly on his daily work in venture capital: students in his courses build cap tables, evaluate term sheets, and analyze the same financing decisions he negotiates in practice.
