William P. Petros

Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine
Medicine, Medical Oncology
Uvu Health Science Center, Room 1824, Morgantown, WV

Overview

The general focus of his research has entailed investigations concerning the clinical pharmacology of both cytokines and cytotoxic drugs in patients with cancer. This work has ranged from studies involving older cytotoxics in the high-dose setting to phase I (first in human) investigations.

More specifically, his lab (http://www.canctr.mc.duke.edu/Shared/PharmRes.htm) utilizes techniques such as HPLC, GC/MS, ELISA and atomic absorption to measure the concentrations of cytotoxics and cytokines from biologic samples generated in both humans and animals. It also provides complete phamacokinetic/pharmacodynamic data analysis by incorporation of state-of-the art modeling techniques. Several of the lab's current investigations involve individualization of patients chemotherapy dosages in order to maintain their systemic exposures in a target range. Additionally, Dr. Petros has conducted detailed studies of endogenous cytokine disposition following high-dose chemotherapy.

His major involvement in clinical trials has been in the high-dose chemotherapy setting for the treatment of breast cancer where he has helped design both the treatment-related and research-related aspects. In addition, he is very active in early phase studies, as part of Duke's Experimental Cancer Therapeutics Program. Other active collaborations involve the following Duke Cancer Center programs: neuro-oncology, hyperthermia and breast cancer.

Dr. Petros is frequently asked to speak or write on the areas mentioned above, particularly the area of cytokine clinical pharmacology and utilization. He has served a national pharmacy organization by forming a network of clinical pharmacists who are involved in hematology/oncology treatment and clinical research. He is an active member of both the Duke institutional review board and the Duke Cancer Center Protocol Review Committee.
