Xuenan Cao is a 3rd year Ph.D. student in the Literature Program at Duke University. She has written on poetry and contemporary Chinese literature in Journal of Language, Literature and Culture and Frontiers of Literary Studies in China.
Under the supervision of Professors Rey Chow and Mark Hansen, her research aims to understand the paranoia of incommunicability and our obsessions with addressing it in a positive light. After all, what if our longing to overcome barriers of communication may actually impede the capacity to comprehend our contemporary media condition? To understand the current world in which strongly negative events, such as failures of channels and threats of destruction, are prevalent, her dissertation will examine negatively communicative conditions with insights from contemporary Chinese literary and artistic works.
