Keeping at par with the increased industrial demand for useful outputs of optoelectronic R&D, manufacturability issues are currently being addressed extensively. The resulting changes in R&D are discussed with examples from industrial, academic and research institutes. In particular, it is shown that R&D in optoelectronics is no longer confined to the traditional emitters, detectors, and the transmitting media, but also in the realization of complete subsystems that depend on multi-level cooperation among a variety of disciplines and, many instances, expertise not necessary under the same roof. Finally, possibilities for introducing manufacturability issues at early stages of R&D are discussed and a few of the main paradigm explored.
