Systemic Response to Trauma

Publication ,  Chapter

The body activates multiple systems in response to trauma. These reactions are complex and initiated to protect the body, but sustained reactions can be harmful. The goals of treatment are directed at minimizing the magnitude of injury and preventing further progression of these systems. It is also important to prioritize the life-threatening injuries first, as they can be overlooked in the setting of severe injury. Understanding the process of resuscitation, inflammation, transfusion, coagulopathy, and metabolism is the foundation for taking care of critically injured patients.
