Introducing Quantum Computing to K-12 Teachers Through a Professional Development Workshop
As quantum computing becomes a national priority, there is a desire for its introduction at the K-12 level. Few K-12 teachers, however, have deep expertise in computer science, let alone quantum computing highlighting the need for more professional development opportunities targeting this emerging field. This paper reports on the design and implementation of one such professional development workshop designed to introduce K-12 teachers to quantum computing and equip them with relevant teaching resources. The workshop involved interactive activities, surveys of teachers’ attitudes towards teaching quantum computing, and a case study with one of the participants. Significant improvements were observed in teacher enthusiasm, confidence, and absorption, as well as a decrease in anxiety levels.
