Cancer is among the leading causes of death in most countries, including the United States. Genetics and exposure to carcinogens in the environment each play major roles in causing cancer. In this chapter, we discuss the interplay between the biology of cancer, genetic factors and environmental carcinogens, and some of the assays and model systems, such as New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) used to test the toxicity of carcinogens and other environmental chemicals. Additionally, we highlight some of the government and world agencies that identify carcinogens and help regulate their exposure and safety to the public.
