At times one will encounter situations that require additional personnel to be present, either for a safety concern, to diffuse a tense or escalating situation, or to clarify legal, ethical, or social questions. These can be quite stressful for the patient, family, and provider involved. Knowing when to step away and get additional help is essential to maintaining professionalism and safety for all involved parties. Keeping the patient at the center of focus and redirecting all involved to that purpose will serve to prevent situations from spiraling into shouting matches or worse.
