Qualitative methodologies have the power to systematically explore and describe a wide variety of nonnumerical data sources, including patient interviews, provider experiences, and photographs. These sources are especially valuable in plastic and reconstructive surgery, where surgeons seek to optimize functional and esthetic outcomes that are often reflected in subjective patient perspectives. This chapter details approaches to developing a qualitative study, from refining a research question to reporting in the literature. This chapter also describes how to utilize mixed-methods research to integrate qualitative and quantitative findings.
