Evaluation of a patient for cataract surgery includes quantification of visual and functional disability attributed to the cataract and a thorough examination of ocular and systemic pathology that could complicate surgery or the postoperative course. After a comprehensive evaluation of each patient’s visual goals, a thorough discussion of the benefits and limitations of available intraocular lens technology sets reasonable expectations for the future.
