Introducing the values-based nurse faculty success model

Background: Nurse faculty shortages and increased levels of reported burnout are negatively affecting the nursing workforce and impacting healthcare. Nurse faculty struggle to balance all aspects of their role, including scholarship/research, teaching, service, and practice, along with their personal values, which can contribute to feelings of burnout. Problem: Traditional models for supporting nurse faculty professional development and evaluation fail to incorporate personal values and do not include practice as its own component of the faculty role. Approach: This article presents the quadripartite Values-Based Nurse Faculty Success Model (VBNFSM), a new framework for nurse faculty that includes a central personal values-based core and adds a practice-based component. Conclusion: The VBNFSM offers a potential antidote to burnout as a guide to increased satisfaction through role harmony.
