Colon Cancer
Colon cancer is a common source of cancer-related morbidity and mortality with prognosis strongly determined by stage of disease. In patients with localized disease, resection is the primary therapy, although recurrences are common. Adjuvant chemotherapy has been shown to improve survival in patients with lymph node involvement. Institutional studies have shown that certain tumor features portend a higher risk of locoregional recurrence and that radiation treatments can mitigate this risk. Additionally, the use of intraoperative radiation therapy in conjunction with chemoradiotherapy can also reduce this risk in locally advanced tumors. Radiation treatments can also be effective in palliation of patients with symptomatic and/or metastatic disease.
