Image-free approach to gaze estimation based on Laser Feedback Interformetry (LFI)
Image-based eye tracking has been a well-established technology for decades, with applications not only in research but also in various fields such as HCI, psychology, marketing, and VR/AR. Despite its maturity, it still faces significant challenges that limit its widespread adoption as a lightweight, plug-and-play ubiquitous solution—particularly its sensitivity to ambient conditions, high power consumption, and privacy concerns. Laser Feedback Interferometry (LFI)-based eye tracking emerges as a promising alternative capable of addressing these limitations. In this work, we present the first comprehensive algorithm demonstrating the feasibility of LFI-based eye tracking, along with the first real dataset and preliminary experimental results that validate the potential of this novel approach.
