Peanut Allergy Prevention: A Quality Improvement Initiative

Previous peanut introduction guidelines contributed to a significant increase in peanut allergies over the past 20 years. This quality improvement project sought to improve providers’ knowledge and implementation of updated guidelines for peanut introduction in infants. The project used a standardized educational module and tools from the Intervention to Reduce Early (Peanut) Allergy in Children training for the 2017 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases addendum guidelines. At project conclusion, provider knowledge improved 70% from baseline, documentation of guideline implementation improved 77.8%, and 77.4% of caregivers of 4- and 6-month-old infants received educational handouts on safe peanut introduction.
