Contemporary vaccines are relying increasingly on modern biotechnology and a vaccine against the AIDS virus is expected to depend even more on new technological advances. Four basic areas of vaccine development are discussed in this context: (1) selection and preparation of candidate immunogens; (2) presentation of immunogens to the immune system; (3) pre-clinical testing of vaccine candidates; and (4) monitoring of vaccine clinical trials.
