Generalized arterial calcification is an unusual finding in infancy. The patient presented had massive hydrops and expired despite intensive therapy. Postmortem examination revealed generalized arterial calcification, extensive placental calcification, periovarian psammoma bodies, a recent myocardial infarct and fibrinoid degeneration of maternal vessels in the decidua. The causes of arterial calcification in infancy are discussed. A relationship between fibrinoid necrosis of maternal decidual vessels and calcium deposition in predisposed fetal tissues is suggested. © 1972 The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
