Biodegradable poly(α-hydroxy ester) thin films as temporary substrates for retinal pigment epithelium cell transplantation

A solvent casting technique was developed to produce thin films of four poly(alpha-hydroxy esters) with various thicknesses. These films were characterized with respect to surface morphology, porosity, and flexibility using scanning electron microscope, mercury porosimetry, and dynamic mechanical analysis, respectively. Their suitability as substrates for retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells was studied in vitro by assessing human fetal RPE cell attachment, proliferation, and maintenance of differentiated function.
