The effect of stimulus intensity upon the localization of sound sources on the median plane

Experimental results reported in this paper and reported by Davis and Stephens [1] define the relationship between sound intensity and subjects' accuracies in localizing a sound source on the median plane. For white-noise intensities greater than 40 dB SL, localization accuracy is independent of intensity level. For white-noise intensities less than 40 dB SL, localization accuracy decreases with decreasing sound level. We hypothesize that this decrease in accuracy occurs because the direction-dependent spectral cues encoded by the outer ear are obscured by auditory system noise. © 1975 Academic Press Inc.
