A model of glucose homeostasis whose behavior resembles clinically observed behavior is subjected to a variety of glucosestimuli. This model is used to focus attention on the mechanism of insulin secretion as related to the duration of glucose infusion during the standard intravenous glucose test (0.5 gm/kg body weight). An important, clinical experiment was suggested and, performed—the duration of glucose infusion was increased from 3 minutes to 12 minutes. An initial peak of insulin is observed at 4 to 6minutes after the beginning of the infusion. This is followed by a fall in insulin levels while the glucose continues to rise. Because of this experiment. Ik initial model of glucose homeostasis has undergone changes to include circulatory and transport dynamics and altered mechanisms of insulin release and liver clearance oj both glucose and insulin. © 1973 by ASME.
