The immunologic response to an allogenic solid organ transplant is complex, and growing evidence supports a role for innate immunity in this process. Additional research is needed to confirm these early observations, extend our mechanistic understanding of innate and adaptive immune cross-talk in the context of organ rejection, and determine whether targeting specific innate immune pathways effectively reduces allograft rejection and improves transplant outcomes. © 2004 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
