Since 1986, several attempts have been made to develop prototype 1 1/2 -D and 2-D transducer arrays. Early efforts have not been successful enough because there are some factors that limit the development of such transducer arrays. These include the requirement for many hundreds of active transducer channels, the severe fabrication difficulties in electrical connection, and the extremely low transducer signal to noise ratio. This report describes the recent progress in attempts to solve these problems.
