A data stream formatter for a 128-channel mapping system was constructed which combines real-time variables and digitized waveforms into information packets. The variables are formatted by a microprocessor once per millisecond creating, with the digitized waveforms, a total throughput of 264 kB/s. Included in each ms of waveform data are four types of information: acquisition parameters, amplifier gain, short-term user variables, and external events. Synchronization of the header word generation with the analog sampling is done using control store to interrupt the microprocessor and control the data acquisition timing.
