Overview
Dr. Eric Funabashi is a historian of modern Japan specializing in the sociocultural transformations of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with a focus on food culture and gender. His research explores how culinary culture shaped discourses on eating habits, womanhood, and national identity during this transformative period. Before entering academia, Dr. Funabashi spent over a decade working in sales, customer service, and marketing in Brazil after earning a B.A. in Social Communications in 2006. He earned an M.A. in East Asian Studies from the University of Alberta in 2016 and a Ph.D. in Modern Japanese History from the University of Kansas in 2024.
