Outreach & Engaged Scholarship

Community Mentor ยท 2010 Community Outreach flag United States of America I serve as a youth mentor in my community through our church and affiliated ministries. I provide opportunities for young women and men to be in our home, many of whom come from single parent homes. Basic cooking skills, self-care and opportunities to build self-esteem are the focus of our programs

Service to Duke

Co- leader · 2013 Professional Development

I serve as a Resident ombudsman, often mentoring members of the intern class as they begin their residency. I offer counsel, feedback and direction regarding their communication styles, their patient interactions and clinical management of patients throughout their high risk obstetrics rotation. Often, i am sought out from leadership of the Residency program to offer targeted education and strategies for improved clinical accumen, which I often do after normal clinic hours.
Additionally, I have been a sponsor for medical student education projects, in partnership with Dr. Elizabeth Livingston. Specifically, opioid dependent moms who are receiving care in our High Risk Obstetric clinic, who would benefit from the development of strong support systems and a continuum of care plan. This project received funding through the School of Medicine for these medical students to develop an infrastructure for ongoing emotional support for these moms.

Clinical Activities

I have had a very busy gynecologic practice for over 30 years in our Department and many patients have seen me since the beginning of my tenure here.  Many have referred family members as well as colleagues.  I have provided care for our Residents, our students, faculty and staff and am a trusted confidant for all.

I teach regularly and often have students with me in my clinical setting.   I also provide care to high risk obstetrics patients and have hired two additional Advanced Practice Providers into our Duke Perinatal
Durham clinic to continue the growth of our APP program

Additionally, I am the Medical Director for both the Duke Perinatal Durham clinic, as well as for the Ambulatory clinics for our Department and have taken an active leadership role in the delivery of care in these clinics.
